CPI - About CPI

If you are planning to advertise on the internet, it is important to understand the idea of cost per impression. When talking about banner ads, the phrase cost per impression, or CPI, refers to a more accurate way of measuring views of an advertisement than simply a recorded number of hits. Understanding the difference between these two things is very important, as a number that only counts hits can be quite inflated and useless for a number of reasons. However, tracking a CPI number is much more useful, which is why it is now the standard method of determining advertising costs.

When measuring hits, it is quite possible to get inflated numbers. This can occur for a wide variety of different reasons. For one thing, many individual viewers will reload a page several times, or travel between multiple pages on the same site. While a hit counter would register these as separate hits, they are obviously of diminishing value to an advertiser. Additionally, a user who visits the same web site multiple times in an extended period is obviously of less value to an advertiser than two users, even though their hit counts might be difficult to distinguish.

CPI removes all of these vague problems. While CPI agreements vary depending on the provider, repeat hits such as reloads and multiple page viewings by one user are usually left out. Additionally, many other insignificant hits are left out as well at the discretion of those making the agreement.

CPI is often replaced by the term CPM, which refers to the cost per thousand impressions. CPM is often used as the unit that prices are written as, for the simple reason that the CPI is usually an extremely small number that is difficult to deal with, and few people are interested in purchasing a number of impressions not in the thousands or more.

It is obvious that having a good understanding of cost per impression and CPM is very important for anyone in the process of an online marketing campaign like SEO Services, PPC Management.

Without understanding these concepts, it is possible to have an advertisement that is much lower in effective value than originally anticipated. Additionally, it is important to understand the parameters of any CPI agreement, as these can be different from provider to provider. Finally, it is important to manage these concepts to get the best advertisements possible. By doing this, a smart advertiser can gain many important advantages.
